7th Tennis Tournament Concludes in a Gouna Win

Image
The 7th annual tennis tournament concluded on Tuesday after four days of lively competition between El Gouna and the visiting Gezira Sporting Club from Cairo. All matches were played at the Gouna Tennis Club.  The competition is a yearly event, on clay, limited to doubles and mixed doubles. No singles matches are contested (yet). The first 3 days saw 42 players from each side play 21 matches on 7 courts over 3 daytime sessions. Luckily, the scheduled bad weather for the Red Sea region passed over El Gouna on the third day, starting around 5:30 pm, after the days matches had completed, and players had gone home. By Finals Day, February the 25th, the sunshine had returned, the clay courts dried out, and play resumed normally. On the final day, top teams played each other to determine the winning team in each of the seven categories named after sea life : Shark, Swordfish, Dolphin, Turtle, Seahorse, Starfish I & II. The final score was determined initially to ...

Intersections Upgraded

Image
A welcome upgrade to the once dangerous two intersections opposite the Gouna Hospital and G-Space have been completed.  With the upgrade, traffic is now segregated.  Cars or Tok Toks can no longer dangerously meet face to face, or ram each other from the side as they enter downtown, from Mohamed Kamel Street, the main road that goes north to Marina.   From now on, traffic flows in one direction. Only right turns are feasible at these intersections.  Moreover, permanent median reflective stakes have been installed in the middle of the main road, replacing the temporary orange cones.  Still to come, hopefully, are zebra crossing black and white stripes on the ground, to designate where pedestrians are to cross. There is adequate room in the design to delineate those crossing points.  Moreover, flowers have been planted in the islands, giving a prettier look to the roads.  To return...

Beach Cleanup in Al Ahyaa

Image
Rotary Club of Red Sea - El Gouna joined community members for a beach clean up in the Al Ahyaa District of Hurghada, just six minutes from the gates of El Gouna, on Monday 10th February 2020. The event was organised by Al Ahyaa resident and friend of Rotary, Carol King, together with Waleed Ramadan of the Ministry of Environment's National Parks of Egypt and HEPCA. The deserted coastline in this area is scattered with plastic waste washed up in the tides and strong winds, which can endanger the local marine life. Rotarians and community members gathered  at 10 am  on a very blustery, and cold day. With temperatures of just 15 degrees, and a wind chill making it feel like 13 degrees, the volunteers soon warmed up as they began collecting rubbish along the stunning coastline. Staff from HEPCA arrived with a truck and the numerous bags full of plastic were loaded up ready to be taken to the nearby recycling plant. Save the dates for the annual community event...
