Breast cancer survivor and Rotarian Mick Verhoogen has started a Rotary Club of Red Sea - El Gouna Pink Ribbon Committee to raise awareness of breast cancer and the importance of regular check-ups. Working together with Gouna Technical Nursing Institute, the first breast cancer awareness event was held on Friday 27th May at 3 pm at El Gouna Church. This event was aimed at the Arabic speaking women in the community of El Bustan in El Gouna. Around 75 women attended and were welcomed by Pink Ribbon Committee member Asmaa Mousa who spoke about the role of Rotary in the community. A slide show presentation was given next by Ms Heba Boshra from GTNI, an experienced Egyptian nursing faculty member specializing in women and family focuses practice. She talked about the importance of a healthy lifestyle to help prevent cancer, and about mammogram and ultra-sound examinations to detect abnormalities in the breast. The Rotary Club of Red Sea - El Gouna celebrated their first anniversary since their official charter date of 20th April 2015. Meeting at the Golf Club Tower for sunset last Tuesday, the Rotarians and their spouses enjoyed a fabulous five-course dinner at Rotisserie Restaurant with thanks to the Steigenberger Golf Resort. Speeches were given by Club President 2015-16 Sherif Abdel Aziz and Club Founder Dina Nashed congratulating the Rotarians on their successful achievements over the past year. The Rotary Club of Red Sea - El Gouna joined in the Earth Week celebrations commencing Friday 15th April 2016 by attending the opening event at Technology University of Berlin, Campus El Gouna. TUB Lecturer Christoph Banhardt welcomed everyone with a presentation about  Green Earth and Healthy Planet giving valuable advice on how to reduce carbon emissions.  This was followed by Biologist Islam El Sadek's interesting presentation about the Red Sea National Parks which cover an area of 48,000 sq. km. There are four types of protected areas in Egypt: coastal, wetlands, desert, and geological which are located in the Northern Red Sea, Wade El Gemal Hamata, and Elba. OHD 2015 net income more than doubles, boosted by sale of land Orascom Hotels & Development (OHD) has reported its financial results for 2015. Revenue grew 24% to reach EGP1,773 million, while net income more than doubled to reach EGP229 million. Profitability was boosted by the closure of two sub-development agreements, covering 110,196 sqm of land, for a combined value of USD22 million. Four new projects were launched in El Gouna, with a total value of USD93.4 million. Total contracted sales for the period totaled EGP695 million, up 74% Y-o-Y. Revenue from sale of land reached EGP541 million, up from EGP105 million in 2014, while that from the real estate segment totaled EGP286 million, down 39% Y-o-Y. Revenue from the hotels segment grew 6% to reach EGP576 million. Occupancy rates for the hotel portfolio averaged 54% (2014: 48%), while average room rate grew 7% to reach EGP345, driven by El Gouna hotels. The Rotary Club of Red Sea – El Gouna had the pleasure to welcome Sandy Weder El Sammra, Nadia Govett, and Remon Nabil from Care For Dolphins and Frogs Swim Academy to our meeting on Tuesday 29th March. They gave a fascinating presentation to Rotary Members and guests about the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) that inhabits the coastal waters in this area of the Egyptian Red Sea. The presentation covered the life history of the dolphins, their complex social network and communication, and the research goals of Care For Dolphins. Positive advances are being made with the Egyptian Red Sea National Marine Parks in creating protective areas where dolphins can rest and feed their young without being disturbed and harassed by tourist boats. Ahmed Galeb, manager of the National Marine Parks also joined our meeting and talked about the three protected areas around the northern Red Sea islands. Downtown Gouna is undergoing a significant public works project aiming to transform it to become more pedestrian friendly. The road in front of Ebeid supermarket will no longer be. The asphalt has been repaved to interlocking stones for comfortable walking and is now closed at both ends to traffic. Moreover, the small parking lot in front of the supermarket is now completely paved. The works are expected to complete by the end of this month. We look forward to update you in a subsequent edition on how the final 'product' will look.
