Handpan Discovery Workshop Dec 29 - Jan 11

This is an invitation to learn the Handpan in a fun, collaborative group environment. Explore the instruments timbre, rhythm techniques and arpeggios. Learn how to play and how to develop a basic compositional structure. The 2 hour workshop will unleash your musical creativity, work on sensitivity in your hands and develop/expand your know how of the magical singing steel in a practical easy to learn, step by step way. The last 30 minutes allows to incorporate the learned patterns in a guided group jam. The workshop is suitable for beginners as well as intermediate students. Available spots are limited so please book ahead of time. All Instruments will be provided as is tea and biscuits. The intimate nature of the workshop enables everyone to receive plenty of individual attention. Booking is essential as the number of available spots is limited. A weekly or monthly rental of an instrument is possible.

Please send a message on Facebook with a prefered date between the 29th of December and the 11th of Jan. The workshops will take place every other day from 3pm - 5pm at different venues around El Gouna.

Handpan Discovery Workshop is facilitated by Zhenya Topov (Zhenya Topov Handpan Music) a Berlin based Handpan artist, world music percussionist, sound designer and music and theatre pedagogue. A former student of Sonic Arts (Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand). MFA in Physical Theatre (Helikos International School for Theatre Creation. Florence, Italy)

Text and photography by Gabriel Mikhail     I n Egypt’s   Eastern Desert, where Gouna is located,   there is a great variety of indigenous trees and  shrubs which have adapted to this region ’s hot and arid conditions.    Desert gardens  have become fashionable in many hot and arid climates around the world. Native plants  use less water  and  insecticides, feed the local wildlife such as birds, are authentic in their setting, show  sensitivity to the environment  and some are used as medicinal plants.    From earliest times the Ancient Egyptians were renowned for their knowledge of medicinal plants. The Papyrus Ebers, an Egyptian medical papyrus of herbal knowledge (c. 1550 B.C.), compiled about  900  remedies, mostly plants, were being used by physicians.
