Bringing a dog into Egypt

Information about bringing dogs into Egypt may be hard to find. Gouna News has compiled a few references on the subject into this article.

As a start, Egyptair has a published policy that clarifies much about the subject.

Moreover, dogs or any animal travelling to Egypt need a PCR test done upon arrival.

The following has been contributed by Christiana Tagh on her experience bringing in Tara her dog.

As I got the information from our vet in Egypt that a PCR test is not required we decided to bring our dog from Austria to our home in Egypt. Beside the information I got from our vet, I also searched all possible sites on internet such as of Cairo Airport, Egypt Air,  different Egyptian Ministries to get information about the requirements needed to have our dog enter Egypt.

Nowhere was there written about a required PCR test or quarantine.
My husband arrived with our dog at Cairo Airport on a Friday at 4.30pm and was stopped by the Customs to have our dog seen by a vet. We had all necessary papers, but nevertheless, after endless discussions the dog was taken into quarantine at the airport to receive a PCR  test.

Unfortunately on Friday and Saturday all governmental offices are closed. With big effort of an airport employee we were able to get our dog tested on Saturday morning 10am.

The negative PCR test was sent to us and the vet at the quarantine station at 4pm.

We were very happy to get our dog out, but got the next shock when we went to the Airport Customs to find out that the office there closed at 3pm

The next day on Sunday, after 4.5 hours of bureaucratic procedures, we finally got our dog out of quarantine at 2pm. Without help we would have been totally helpless to finish all these bureaucratic procedures. We had to pay:
500 egp for the PCR test
600 egp for quarantine accommodation
902 egp for Customs duty that is not understandable.
(They told us because of the current Corona virus situation we have to pay Customs duty for the dog).

I have no problem if there is a requirement for animals entering Egypt to have a PCR test taken, but this requirement needs to be posted somewhere officially.
