Why Not A Dubai Hurghada Route?

As one surveys the mounting popularity of Egypt’s Red Sea coast, one is encouraged by the increased number of charter airlines adding Hurghada as a destination. The vast majority of these flights bring tourists from Europe directly to the sunny resorts by flying into Hurghada International Airport. This airport serves El Gouna north of Hurghada to Safaga in the south. Airlines such as Pegasus and Turkish from Istanbul, Condor from Munich, Berlin, Hanover,  Dusseldorf, Stuttgart, Leipzig, Hamburg and Frankfurt. TUI from Manchester and Birmingham. Thomas Cook from Glasgow, London and Newcastle, Germania from Rostock, Bremen and Erfurt. These are only a sample few, not a complete list.

More direct flights operate from Austria, Switzerland,  Belgium, Holland, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine etc. This does not include the many flights from Russia that were suspended in 2015 and are expected to return this year.

But the glaring gap in this activity is the lack of flights from the East. Notably Dubai, a city which is a stopover hub to the world. Passenger traffic transiting Dubai airports has reached 90 million per year. This makes Dubai the third busiest airport in the world, beating London Heathrow and Chicago O’Hare.

Dubai has completed building the largest airport in the world, aptly named Dubai World Central, where you can expect to travel through, flying from anywhere to anywhere, whether New York to Mumbai, Johannesburg to Milan or Beijing to Nairobi.  Dubai’s Emirates Airlines covers all routes and combinations. Moreover, it’s sister airline, FlyDubai, brings passengers to Dubai from smaller lesser known destinations such as Tbilisi, Rostov-on-Don or Odessa.

Dubai is therefore a gold mine of travellers and potential tourists to the Red Sea. Hurghada has a beautiful modern under-utilised world class international terminal, opened six years ago waiting to receive them.

Many Egyptians that travel between Upper Egypt and the Gulf would use a Dubai-Hurghada route as well, ensuring its profitability. It is only a three hour flight after all.

But there are no direct flights between Hurghada and Dubai. Neither Egyptair, Air Cairo Or FlyDubai operate such a route.

Can we expect to see this happen one day?

  1. I totally agree. It will be a profitable route, especially if flight shedule takes into consideration week ends. Like going to Hurghada on Thursday afternoon and returning on late Saturday or Sunday. I guarantee you it will be a success.
